Summer Planting Galore!!!

I have lots to share since my last e-newsletter. Can you believe it! It is officially summer. Florida has received its fair share of rain this summer, already. I love it!!! Well, my vegetable garden and my newly planted tropical plants love it! I love it because I don’t have to water it every day.

I had a jump start on my garden early this year in March. Yes, I attempted to give another go at Vietnamese squashes, tomatoes, and snap peas. I also added mints, cilantros, and Thai basils. My squashes are growing like weeds with lots of flowers. I have at least 5 tomato plants growing but no flowers, yet.  My snap peas are not as rigorous this year. They wilted. =(. All these plants were grown from seeds.

It is not too hard to grow from seeds. All you need is some good dirt and water them everyday. The hardest part is maintaining them. Oh yeah, don’t forget to add – lots of patience and TLC. We can apply the same strategy into almost anything that we create in our everyday life and watch it blossom.

From seeds, I also planted 2 pomelos (large grapefruits), 2 longans, 2 leechees, 1 mango, and 1 rambutan. Because these plants were grown from seeds, it will take at least 8 to 10 years before the fruits will harvest. Keep your fingers crossed that all these tropical plants will blossom over the next 10 years. I will post the pictures of the fruits in my next e-newsletter and/or on facebook. If I am still doing demonstrations when the trees have fruits, I will bring them to share. =)

Remember my compost from last year? The bottom of the compost is kind of ready for use. Not all compost turned into dirt, yet. I have been using a little of it for my tropical fruit plants. Yay!!! So much fun!!!

Speaking of fun, I have completed 7 demonstrations at 7 libraries since June 6, 2012. Wow, what fun groups!!! I have met so many wonderful participants and great cooks. It is such a humbling experience. During my demonstrations, my heart leaped when I spotted my own children making their own springrolls and enjoying them without being nagged by me. Yay!!!

The Rock N’ Roll spring roll / summer roll tour scheduled is posted. Please visit http://phoqueencooking.com/demonstration.html for the demonstration schedule to the library near you in Orange County.

I also posted a list of local Asian grocery stores in Orlando and Vietnamese restaurants around the Mills & Colonial area. Please visit http://phoqueencooking.com/demonstration.html and scroll down to the bottom of the website.
